When Mathematics Meets Journalism

Mathematics has always played a vital role in shaping our understanding of the modern world. It combines numbers and critical thinking to explain complex patterns in nature, society, and even within the boundaries of reality and imagination, by revealing truths that are sometimes beyond our sight. Surprisingly, mathematics can be applied to nearly anything, including journalism. A new competition is calling upon young reporters to use mathematics to explore global issues and events.

Every year, the Cypriot Mathematics Society (CMS), known for organizing events like the District Mathematics Competition, the Mathematics Olympiad, and the Theatrical Competition of Mathematics, hosts a Pan-Cyprian writing competition. This competition encourages students to develop their critical thinking and writing skills by exploring intriguing topics that link mathematics to the world around us. Previous themes have included "Mathematics in the Applied World" and "Mathematics and Economics." So far, no student from our school has entered, but this year, there is a growing sense that Xenion students could make a difference in the competition.
Why
should you participate in this competition?
This is an excellent opportunity to combine your knowledge of the world with
one of the oldest and most powerful sciences, mathematics, in pursuit of
insight and growing yourself. You don't need to write a formal thesis or prove
a hypothesis. Instead, the aim is to creatively and critically connect
mathematical concepts to real-world issues.

Since the competition is open to students across Cyprus, the winner will gain recognition across the island, for their ability to think analytically and write effectively, which is a rare and valuable combination of skills. Additionally, top articles will receive recognition, providing a proof of achievement for your efforts. With just a few hours of dedication, you could create something truly remarkable that gains lasting appreciation.
This year's competition topic focuses on Climate Change, a pressing global challenge that humanity must address. The Journalism Club, in collaboration with the Mathematics Department, is helping students prepare for the competition. We encourage you to take part; this is a chance to engage with an important issue, sharpen your skills, and stand out in a meaningful way. Good luck to all who decide to participate!
